Hi Readers.

My problem is simply that I cannot open any webpages. I do get a valid ip address from my ISP. I can ping any websites using only the IP address not FQDN. I have disabled the firewall Mcafee. I have a direct connection with cable modem. I am using Win98. TCP/IP settings are set to automatic. I do get valid DNS server addresses and my ISP says that there are no problems with their DNS servers. I don't believe I have any viruses.

Could someone please suggest what I might be doing wrong. I am using a LinkSys USB network adapter. All drivers are properly installed.

Many thanks in advance.

For the sake of others (old post);

It sounds like your browser is possibly set to use a Proxy Server or McAfee itself is interfering with your web browsing. I would check your browser to see if it has a Proxy Server defined (usually Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings.

Be sure no Proxy Servers are in use. Other then that, the only thing I can think of is to un-install McAfee (temporarily) as it could well be interfering whether it's turned on or off. :top:

I had similar issues on Windows ME. Unfortunately the only "fix" I could find was to download another browser and use that instead. Internet Explorer would occasionally work but repeatedly "went out" to where I simply couldn't connect to anything as you described.

If you want something lightweight and similar to Internet Explorer I would suggest Avant.

Hope you managed to find the problem!
