I recently moved from edmonton where i had a shaw modem..so i do have a modem.
The problem is when i connect my old shaw modem it doesnt work.
Is there a way to re-set the modem or how do i configure my old modem to work?
do i need to reset the IP address so it works with her Ip address?

Hi Tersie;

Your old Shaw modem won't work because it's no longer 'authorized'. The only way to make that modem work would be to call up Shaw and re-open your account.

So, your modem isn't junk - it's just not how you share the existing connection.

What you need is a router, or, more specifically, what your roomate needs is a router. Then you can share her Internet.

If both computers have wireless then it's relatively easy. You need a wireless router. Check with your roomate first to see if she already has a router. If so, then you're $$ ahead. If not (and her computer is plugged straight into her cable modem) then you need a router. Not a big deal, they are usually less then $50 or so.

Hi Tersie;

Is it a wireless router? Are both of your computers able to use wireless?

That's one of the first questions you need to resolve.

I'm assuming your roomate is using Telus?

Usually the router has a reset button that you can press that will return it to the default settings including the default username and password. I would recommend going out on the Internet and downloading the user manual for the router before going any further.

It can get complicated without being armed with the right information. :)

Hi, her computer is hooked up to a cable modem. How do i find out if my computer and her computer can be used for wireless?
And the old router she has is telus but she is using Shaw for her internet access.
I tried the reset button on her router but it still asks for a password when i try to connect with my IPOD.

When you reset the router it goes back to using the default username and password. I don't know what it is.

You need to determine the make & model of the router and then download the owner's manual for it. Then you'll know what the default username/password is. :)

Thanks for all your help...
In order to do the default user name and password on the router dont i need a program on my computer..like a driver or some kind of software?
It is a telus siemens gigaset SE567.
i think if i had some kind of software to work with on my computer i might be able to get the router working..so then i can at least use the internet on my ipod.
Any ideas where i can get some software for this router??
ive searched everywhere on the internet :(

Hi Tersie;

You don't need (or want) to install software for the router. Instead, you access it through your web browser.

So what you do is you go to a machine that is connected to it (probably your roomate's) and then open up the web browser.

You then type in;

192.168.1.254 and hit enter.

You should then be prompted for your username and password. The defaults are reported to be;

User name is admin
Password is telus

From there you can configure the router. So, you don't want to install software - you access the router through a web browser.

Apparently your router looks like the attached picture...and it is a wireless G router.

You know what, it's probably going to be much easier for you to just buy a new router from NCIX or someplace similar....

Ditch the Telus router - it's going to be too complicated and it may be difficult to use with Shaw being that it's a Telus router. It may well have been designed only for xDSL - I don't know for certain because I don't have one.

To answer your questions though, yes, the router does need to be plugged into both her computer and the cable modem. It sits in between the two.

Assuming the router actually works with Shaw, and that it's wireless is OK, you would then have wireless access to the Internet.

The router is left between the cable modem and her computer. It's not moved anywhere. It has to remain connected to her computer and to the cable modem :)

In order to access the router's interface it has to be plugged into her computer and powered up. It looks like this;

Cable Modem => Router => Her Computer.

The problem, as I see it, is that the Telus router may only work with xDSL and not with a cable connection. That adds a lot of potential complexity to the issue.

Hi tersie,

did you get your issues resolved?

I downloaded the user manual for your gigaset SE567.

It supports both xDSL and cable modems.

Let me know if you still need help.
