Hi Holst!
You forgot to add an option for "I have XP and am planning on upgrading to Windows 7 at some point"
That's what I'm planning on doing one day. Until then, XP is really, really good. I use XP's Media Center edition as my DVR but most of the 3rd party apps I'm using have all moved well over to Windows 7 and support for XP has dwindled.

I'll be waiting until my next hardware upgrade. My current system only supports a couple of gigs of ram which I doubt is enough to run Windows 7 anywhere close to what one would want it too.
In the mean time.....I'll continue watering the old money tree in the hope that it will some day bear fruit....

Oh, you should update. It's really good, and runs faster than XP on my computer. I am yet to have a crash, and the UI is amazing. I love Windows 7 so much.

I heard a similar report - that it actually runs faster then XP on lesser hardware :o
It sounds like Microsoft made Windows 7 more efficient. Up until now the trend has been a larger and more bloated O/S with each new release.
I haven't seen Windows 7 yet, but, like Lawrence, I actually want to do a hardware upgrade before moving to it. I'm still using an Athlon XP 3200+ so I'm long overdue. The problem is that because my system is so old I pretty much have to replace everything when I do upgrade.
That means two new tuners, a new video card, a new sound card, new memory, new processor, new mainboard - you get the picture ^_^ About the only thing I can keep is my case, power supply and hard drives

Hi Marvin Nice to see you back. Not all that keen on Windows 7 at the moment. I had no choice but to get a new computer though, so decided I'd best move with the times. At the moment my old antivirus/firewall suite is not compatible with Windows 7 and the one I have bought doesn't cut the mustard (for me anyway), although I’m sure when all the teething troubles are over Windows 7 will be a much better system. Also finding that the 64 bit IE version is not compatible with things like Flash, so again, perhaps it's just a little before it's time. Arjay

Hi Arjay;
Thanks for the welcome :top:
You might want to try Microsoft's Anti-Virus solution - it's free, designed for Windows 7 and probably the best available (or, will be!). You can find it here Microsoft Security Essentials

I skipped Vista myself because I found it clunky and hard to work with. The way I always described it was Microsoft took steps to "idiot proof" (I hate to use the term, but couldn't think of another) computers so that users wouldn't be so apt to cause themselves trouble. Administrative work also felt more "Linuxy" than what I was used to with Windows.
Edit: I understand Microsoft was under a lot of pressure from Mac at the time though. Mac always liked to hammer on PCs as being complex, virus ridden, incompatible, et cetera. Vista was probably a great move to capture the not-so-savvy when it comes to technology but it was a major pain for the rest of us.
Windows 7 is a great step in the right direction though. I was very pleasantly surprised when I got to play with it, and I will likely upgrade from XP, albeit solely for the reason of keeping up with the times. I still think XP is a great operating system.

I can't speak to Windows 7 being faster then XP. It has been two years or more since I have run XP on my machine. That being said, 7 is certainly speedy! And I completely agree with Lawrence and Marvin; waiting for your next upgrade can't hurt.

HI Marvin Thanks for that info. I have now re-enable the stock Windows Firewall (apparently Windows Firewall is now inbound and outbound) and I have removed ALL anti-virus/spyware products including Windows Defender, then I installed the Microsoft Security Essentials program. I will be a lot happier when my usual anti-virus/spyware suite supports Windows 7 but that won't be until January 2010 at the earliest. Arjay

I have a couple PCs with XP, a couple with Vista, and even a few still running Win2K! Of all of them I prefer XP. I think Microsoft did a good job on it, and it runs well. I have no problems with Vista. Early on, IE kept closing. I fixed that by uninstalling Java and Flash, installing the IE updates, then downloading and installing the latest Java and Flash back in. Worked like a champ ever since!
If I jump to Windows 7 anytime soon, it will be strictly out of curiosity.

Dave, If you are curious about Windows 7, just try it. Its really, really good. I think it reminds me a lot more of XP, than Vista, for some reason. Its really fast, and runs just as good, if not faster than XP on most hardware. You mentioned your Vista PC's, Windows 7 will run well on those. In the two weeks I have had this now, it has not crashed once, and I have had no compatibility issues, even though I have installed some pretty ancient software. LOL:)

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit installed also and am digging it compared to Vista Ultimate no comparison when it comes to performance. Win 7 isn't stealing my RAM like Vista did and as you can see I have 8Gb in there. I was always maxing out after it hibernating a few times. I would have to reboot to get it back.
Anyway, I do like the MP7 setup with MetaBrowser and several other plugins its rather sick really. I over 1000 movies and countless full series' of TV shows all with covers and synopsis' that play well in MP7.
I recommend moving to the Win 7. In my case the upgrade path didn't work on my laptop or my HTPC and I was going from Pro to Pro and Ultimate to Ultimate which is how you have to do it. No bother, I didnt want remnants of Vista on the new OS anyway.
Edit: forgot to mention... on both installs.. .it found every single of piece hardware and installed the drivers for it (except the finger print scanner but that was easily fixed). B)
Good to see you back Marvin!
