I was having problems with iTunes (it couldn't find music), so I uninstalled it using MS XP 'add or remove programs' and downloaded a new installer version of iTunes. During the installation, I receive the same error message each time at the point of 'unscheduling apple software'. The message reads "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for the install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor'

So, following a few threads on AskMarvin, I downloaded a new MS installer..that didnt' help. I then downloaded "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" as per AskMarvin, and that will not install. That error message is "ActiveX component can't create object Scriping.FileSystemObject Code 800A01AD Microsoft VB Script runtime error.

I've emptied all temp files, got rid off all Apple/itunes stuff.

Any ideas how to fix this?

thanks!

Hi and welcome.

I am not a itunes user but it sounds like a script error or the files are damaged.

Try downloading new script files.

I think that's where your problem lies. First you need to get the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility working.

According to MS, "To resolve this issue, register the WScript object by running the wscript -regserver command from a command prompt or from the Run command on the Start menu."

Hopefully after that the Windows Installer Cleanup utility will work and then you can follow the steps in the post you mentioned earlier :top:

well, I finally got the Windows Install Cleanup downloaded, but when I run the program, how do I know which program is the problem? It simply gives me a list of all my installed programs-now what? iTunes still not installing, btw. It still stops at the 'unscheduling apple software updates" :)
thanks!

Sigh...more iTunes problems. After I got it working again, it suddenly stopped cooperating, and won't launch again. I've uninstalled, repaired and followed previous fixes. This time, when I attempt to launch the program, I receive the following error message "The folder 'iTunes' cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this program is inside the 'my music' folder."

however, when I go to 'my music' folder, there is indeed an 'itunes' folder there. So, now what??

thanks!

Hi Spawley;

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time of it with iTunes. I know there's been more then a few posts about it on this site over the years so you're not the only one :top:

I checked out your issue on the Internet and came up with what I suspect might be the solution for you. It does involve editing the registry though.

If you would, please go to a DOS prompt and then type in regedit and hit enter. You should get a new window that exposes the guts of your computer :lol:

Please drill down to (in the left pane);

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

At that point, in the right-hand window, you should see an entry called My Music make sure that it's set to the proper directory for your music.
IE: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music (username would be your username or the name you use to log-in to your computer.

If you don't know what your username is, just look at all the other entries on the right hand side - pretty much all of them will have your username in the entry.

Hopefully that will case it for you and allow you to once again launch the program :)

Let me know how you make out, my apologies for not getting back to you sooner, I had a bunch of things that needed to get done today :)

sigh..not yet! I did fix a few things in the shell, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders.
My Music was blank, so I added the value, and in another shell area something was set to F: (which is a flash drive), and I corrected that, %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\. But iTunes still won't load.

Also, installed Tweak UI, and one is supposed to be able to ensure My Music is in the correct C:\....spot, and re-direct it if not, but My Music didn't even appear under Special Folders. It simply didn't exist.

-------------------------------------------
It exists in the registry, though. And I can physically see it. Going mad....

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

My Music was set to a non-expandable value! So, I changed it, and, drum roll, please... iTunes opened! Now..let's see if it stays stable!

Way to go!!! :top: :top:

I knew about that location in the registry, and I was going to recommend looking at it, but when I checked my registry I did not have that entry at all - so I assumed that the information regarding this issue (I found it on another site) was incorrect :o

I'm really glad you cased it and I'm even more happy that you posted up what the answer was. That will probably help a lot of people in the future who run into this issue :top:
