I have a friend who wants to get a website. He will use it for updating Archery Tournaments. I think they have probably 50 members that would be viewing. All he wants is to put where the tournament locations and results. He said he wants it simple. I told him about free ones and he said he would pay to make sure everyone could remember the site. We searched for the domain name he wants and it is available. Thanks for any tips. Tom

Hi Tom;

For domain name registration I would use these guys. They answer to go canadian domains but I don't think there's anything Canadian about them :lol: I registered several names with them and when I wanted a Canadian domain (.ca) they told me they couldn't offer them.

A bit of a discrepency between their name and their service :wacko:

Nevertheless, their price was good and as importantly, their web interface is awesome. Highly recommended (unless you want to lease a Canadian domain name from Go Canada Domains) :blink:

So, that's the best choice for domain name registration.

For hosting a small site it's really hard to beat ipowerweb.com I used them for years with this site (it's now hosted by myself at home) but they were good. I would estimate that they were 75% near perfect and I'm a really tough customer. So, for all but the largest and most complex sites those guys will do.

That's an important one - there are TONS of scammer hosting providers out there. And I mean, tons! It's really easy to fall into a trap and then you're contacting the better business bureau, or worse yet, your lawyer.

For making the site, if it's small and simple - use Microsoft's Front Page. iPowerWeb supports it with the Front Page server extensions and the goal is that if you can use Microsoft Word - You can use Front Page.

That's the path I would take. Estimated cost per year (including hosting and domain name) would be around $120 - pretty darn cheap for what you get.

Thanks Marvin. So you are running a server from your home ? I bet that was a fun project. What type system you have for the server ? I have always wanted to do that but always thought it may be a little over my head :rolleyes: As I head toward my retirement years (turn 63 soon) I would like to take on something like that. I still love working with computers. I guess it comes from being an auto tech in the past. Computers are much cleaner :top: Thanks again and :D glad to see you are back up and running. Tom

It looks like this (poor picture below) and it's very complex.

Firewall = Compaq DL360 G3 w/ISA 2004 with forward and reverse caching. Also L2TP/IPSEC authentication/passthrough for VPN Access and External DNS server (so to speak).

Web Server = PowerEdge 2650 w/Windows 2000 Advanced Server running IIS 5 / PHP 5 / MySQL 5 - this is what serves up the website

Domain Controller = Compaq DL380 G2 running Certificate Services, DNS, DHCP, IAS and Veritas Backup Exec 10.x software (backup machine)

Mail Server = DL360 G3 running Windows 2000 Advanced Server & Exchange 2000 Enterprise (mail server) / DNS / Anti-spam software (ORF 4.3) with ClamAV anti-virus. That machine is monitored remotely several times a day to check for valid RDNS, Blacklistings, SPF records etc.

A standard motorola cable modem for Internet traffic :o :lol: A small UPS (to small) for power protection etc. Numberous SCSI drives on Raid Arrays for data protection.

A smattering of other machines spread out around the network including a couple of wireless access points etc.

Like yourself, I used to be an automotive mechanic / shop owner etc. :)

How in the world did you learn to build that. That does look complex. Other than just wanting to build one don't you think it would be better to just pay someone to host a site ?? I assume you are also paying for a static ip address. Do you require extra bandwidth to run a server ? Are you doing this for a living now Marvin ? I believe you could. :top: Tom
