Just installed Windows 7 on my machine. Downloaded the latest Live package which includes Live Messenger. Messenger won't connect, giving me the error 81000306 - the Microsoft help with that error code bears no relation to reality and thus doesn't fix it.
On closer inspection of the Connections settings, MSN says "you are currently not connected to .net messenger service", so I assume that's what's going wrong - but how do I solve it?
I would uninstall Live Messenger and roll back to a previous version, however, according to the installed programs list on my PC, Live Messenger isn't installed, despite the fact it is (I assume it's packaged under one of the Live headers).
Fail.
Anyway, anyone who can tell me how to fix this issue will be hurled thanks and praise.

Hah! Well I manage to remove and re-install. This time it says I am directly connected to the .NET do dah. But it still won't sign in, now with a 8100030d error. Did a retry and it's back to the original error message and now I'm not connected to .NET any more.

Are you using a firewall of some sort?
If a firewall is blocking access to the network you'll get this error message.

I'm only using Windows firewall, and that's been marked for letting MSN through. Am using Avast! anti-virus, but I don't think that does anything to MSN other than scans incoming files.

Hmm, I have just removed MSN from the allowed programs in the Firewall options and it's suddenly started working. I've just made the most confused face I've ever made.
