How To Configure Your Computer to Use A Proxy Server

For this step we'll use the address information you wrote down about your ISP's Proxy Server. Open your web browser and Click on Tools, then Internet Options, then the Connections tab, & then LAN Settings. Make your screen look exactly like this one except in the address box type in the Proxy Server Name you got from the chart above. Hit the OK button, Close and Re-Open your browser and you're done!

Optional Information for Router & HotMail Users

Please select the Advanced button you'll see the following screen. If you're using a LinkSys router and the 192.168.1.* IP address range you should enter the same settings in the Exceptions tab as I have here (192.168.1.*;) That way you won't be trying to use the Proxy Server for local requests like your router!

If you are using a different model router that uses a different address set then substitute that information instead of 192.168.1.* - If you don't understand these two paragraphs then feel free to skip this step - but make certain that Use the same Proxy Server for all Protocols is selected as shown below.

If you are using Hotmail through Outlook Express then ensure that the following entries are in the Exceptions box;

  • *.hotmail.com;
  • *.msn.com;
  • *.services.msn.com;
I also recommend adding the following;
  • *.microsoft.com;
  • *.shaw,ca;
  • 192.168.1.*;
It's not often that you see a site that does not want to work through a Proxy Server but if you suspect one does just add it to the list in the exceptions box. This gives you the ability to use the Proxy Server for all surfing except the sites you specify.

Here's a list of all of the recommended exclusions all in a row for easy copying and pasting;

192.68.1.*;*.microsoft.com;*.msn.com;*.shaw.ca;localhost;

Okay, you're now ready for the last step in our series - Modifying Your Operating System Default TCP/IP Settings
